Delta Beta Chi was founded in Annapolis Hall in the Fall of 1981 at Frostburg State College. This so-called “fraternity” was put forth as a joke, entering under the name Delta Tau Chi (same as in the movie Animal House) to the administration for chartering. The administration promptly said no to their plea. This caused a stir within these joke-laden member, so they decided to start a real fraternity. They began seeking a charter under the name Delta Beta Chi. This plea was graciously accepted, and on March 9, 1982, their chapter was complete. There were 11 founding fathers. This was by no means the end of this chapter in Delta Beta Chi history.
The little sisters of Delta Beta Chi were added (later to become Delta Delta, then Phi Sigma Sigma, and then Delta Delta once again returning to their roots). In 1990, the campus administration forced upon us the need to have a national affiliation under which we became the Epsilon Septation chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa. Five short years later, we unanimously decided to drop our national affiliation and return to the always strong traditions of Delta Beta Chi.
Our Beta chapter history begins not as Delta Beta Chi but instead as the Kappa Septaton chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa. The Kappa Septaton Chapter began as an idea by a few students at Buffalo State College who were living in campus housing with a transfer student named Bryan Newman, who was a Brother from Frostburg State University in Maryland. Newman's chapter was originally a local fraternity, Delta Beta Chi. While Newman was with the chapter at FSU they gained national affiliation with Phi Sigma Kappa.
In November of 1993 the ritual was administered and the Kappa Septaton chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa was offically formed at Buffalo State College.
The Kappa Septaton chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa continued on at Buffalo State college from November of 1993 until 2007 when the chapter decided to drop its national affiliation and return to its roots and since those roots are the same as Bryan Newmans roots, the chapter decided to speak to the brothers of Delta Beta Chi and become the beta chapter.
John K. and Brian C. Phi Sigma Kappa brothers, and Shann K. the first official brother of the new chapter of Delta Beta Chi held the first official meeting of the new Beta Chapter of Delta Beta Chi in December of 2007. The chapters numbers have increased since then and continue to grow.
